·         Alcoa (AA 16.42, +0.06, +0.37%)  is expected to post earnings of 18 cents a share for the fourth quarter, according to a FactSet Research survey of analysts.
·         Apollo Group Inc. (APOL 37.98, -1.49, -3.77%)  is forecast to post earnings of $1.35 a share for its fiscal first quarter.
·         After Friday’s closing bell, Genzyme (GENZ 71.39, -0.17, -0.24%)  shares jumped in late trading after The Wall Street Journal reported that the biotech firm and Sanofi are discussing a merger that would value Genzyme at roughly $80 a share if certain milestones are met.
·         FirstEnergy Corp. (FE 38.25, +0.09, +0.24%)  said federal regulators have approved the company’s pending acquisition of Allegheny Energy Inc. (AYE 25.15, +0.10, +0.40%) The all-stock deal, announced last February, calls for FirstEnergy to pay $27.65 a share, or $4.7 billion, to acquire Allegheny, a smaller power-generation company based in Maryland. They’re still awaiting word from state regulators in Pennsylvania and Maryland.
·         Tenet Healthcare Corp. (THC 6.89, +0.02, +0.29%)  adopted a poison-pill shareholder-rights plan designed to fend off the unwanted takeover proposal offered last month by rival hospital operator Community Health Systems Inc. (CYH 38.03, -0.76, -1.96%) .
·         United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL 25.95, +0.20, +0.78%)  said that traffic increased last month as it flew more planes, but fourth-quarter earnings would be reduced by $10 million because of lost revenue attributable to snowstorms.
·         Verizon Wireless (VZ 35.93, -0.30, -0.83%)  on Friday sent out invitations for an event to be held in New York next week, where the carrier is widely expected to announce the availability of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL 336.12, +2.39, +0.72%)  iPhone on its network. A Verizon spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.
·         Bank stocks could be under renewed pressure Monday after the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled against Wells Fargo & Co (WFC 31.50, -0.65, -2.02%)  and U.S. Bancorp (USB 26.09, -0.20, -0.76%)  in two foreclosure cases. One of the judges said the banks showed “utter carelessness” in how they documented the titles to their assets. Experts said the decision could make upend banks who want to foreclose on mortgages that wound up in securities
